 Come hear the stories of the Wagiman people of Pine Creek and its surrounds. The elders and young ones will tell you about their personal experiences living, working and growing up in the Territory as well as their creation stories for the land that they call home.

TERESA TAKES THE RAILROAD

 

Teresa explains what life was like travelling and working along the railroad between Katherine, Pine Creek and Darwin. Teresa also reminisces on what it was like to ride in the train with her family.

OOLOO CROSSING

 

Teresa, Jabul and Ivy talk about how they used to fish and cross the river in the old days to camp on the other side, where there is also a dreaming site present. They also visit a place they used to camp further down the river where Jabul shows us where he would catch fish.

DOUGLAS-DALY TOURIST PARK - FISHING FOR TURTLE

 

Teresa, Jabul and Ivy take a break on our way back from Ooloo Crossing to fish for some turtle near the entrance to the Douglas-Daly Tourist Park.

BAN BAN SPRINGS AND GROVE HILL ROAD AND PUB

​

Teresa, Jabul and Ivy take us through their lives working cattle stations around Ban Ban and Grove Hill as well as the pub that is still standing by the railroad there. We also visit camp sites of the "old people" which are still camp sites for the Wagiman today. Ivy and Teresa also shows us how to find water from plants when you are surviving out bush and Teresa tells us about the Turtle Dreaming that is present along the road to Grove Hill.

BONROOK, CLARAVALE ROAD,DALY RIVER, AND SHILLING HOLE 2015

Teresa, Jabul and Ivy take us through points of significance along Claravale Road showing us where they worked, lived, camped and spent their Holidays with their family. Jabul reconstructs his family home from memory and everyone shares stories that were passed down to them during those times. We also find some good busktucker and other plants and animals along the way.

TERESA, IVY AND JABUL IN CORNPATCH/ DOUGLAS-DALY TOURIST PARK 2015

After searching for the "man foot" rock at Cornpatch on the previous trip with Yvonne, Jabul deliberates about whether or not he has found it as well. He believes he has found the right one for us based on his many previous visits and findings with Lenny years before.

LENNY AND MARK IN KATHERINE 2015

Mark visits Lenny in hospital in Katherine and speaks about the stock-man work Lenny used to do as a young man as well as his childhood growing up around Pine Creek. Lenny and Mark tell these stories in both Wagiman and English.

TERESA AND IVY HOT SPRINGS/TJUWALYN 2015

Teresa and Ivy discuss the sacredness of Tjuwalyn and why it is a significant site for women. They also discuss the issues with tourism around this sacred site and the need for better and more sustainable measures in protecting it. 

TERESA, YVONNE AND SHUKEEMA AT BLACK CAT

Teresa and her family take us through what used to be an old camp of their family's at Black Cat near Pine Creek and tell us the tragic story of the area. Shekeema also tell us about the wet season here and how you can find some interesting animals as well as some good bushtucker here.

JABUL, LENNY, TERESA AND IVY CLARAQVALE ROAD AND CROSSING, SAWMILL

The Wagiman elders visit important spots across the river at the Claravale Crossing where we will see Jabul's birthplace at Sawmill as well as talk about some bush-tucker, dreaming in the area , and where Jabul and Ivy used to live during the floods of the wet season.

TERESA AND IVY, PINE CREEK COROBORREE AND POSSIBLE GANGARRAK DREAMING NEAR KYBROOK

Follow Teresa and Ivy as they talk about how they used to do different corroborrees in Pine Creek when they were younger. We also travel a few km outside of town near Kybrook to see if we can find the Blue-Tongue Dreaming which has become difficult to find since mining began in the area. We also find and hear about Teresa's birthplace up on the hill near Pine Creek.

TERESA AND LENNY AT EMERALD SPRINGS AND HAYES CREEK

Follow Teresa and Lenny as they take us to places of their youth along the Stuart Highway at Emerald Springs and Hayes Creek. They tell us what life was like there a few decades ago as well as how the old people used to camp there along with the Dagoman.

Here, Teresa and Lenny talk about how they would walk here from the nearby cattle stations and camp here for holiday cooking up fish and other bush-tucker. Teresa also talks about the significance of the site for women and the dreaming there.

Lenny and Teresa tell us about the camping spots in this area, where we find interesting flora and fauna and dreaming as well as what it was like working in the area, especially around the Grove Hill Pub.

Follow the Wagiman elders to search for the Blue Tongue Dreaming near Pine creek before we head along Claravale Road towards Shilling Hole where we will learn about the dreamings and other important family history sites along the way as well as good bush-tucker.

LENNY, TERESA AND IVY OLD HIGHWAY CAMPING AND DREAMING, ADELAIDE RIVER TOWN

Lenny, Teresa and Ivy take us along the Old Highway from Pine Creek to Adelaide River where we discuss old camping spots where they would find bush-tucker when on holiday from working on the cattle stations nearby as well as  some dreaming. We also see Teresa and Banjo's old place in Adelaide River and learn about what life was like working in Adelaide River in those old days.

LENNY AND TERESA AT BUTTERFLY GORGE

Lenny and Teresa view some footage of our hike up to the top of Butterfly Gorge and talk about how they used to hike and camp here looking for bush-tucker when on holiday. You can see the diverse vegetation of the area in the videos as well.

LENNY AND TERESA AT CORNPATCH/DOUGLAS DALY TOURIST PARK, OOLOO ROAD, BANJI STATION AND RIXON STATION

Lenny and Teresa take us along Ooloo Road and talk about what life was like travelling through this area, some dreaming at Cornpatch as well as life on the cattle stations in the area.

LENNY AND TERESA AT CUSTARD APPLE AND MACDONALD AIRFIELD AS WELL AS WATERING HOLES

Follow Lenny and Teresa through the hills around Pine Creek and the Old Higway to Custard Apple where Lenny used to hide in caves as a young boy. We will see some dreaming along the way as well as some medicine camps as we make our way to the Airfield. Afterwards, we head across the Stuart Highway to see some important water spots for the Wagiman long ago when they would travel the area on holiday. Now, many of the water holes are dry due to the dry season, climate change, and recent mining activities nearby.

Listen as the Wagiman Elders discuss tourism options at Umbrawarra Gorge as well as how technology can be involved in telling tourists about country. Daphne and Jabul also explain the importance of the trees at Umbrawarra Gorge and how they make good bush-tucker.

Follow Lenny and Teresa through the Aquarium and Nocturnal House to discover some of the animals that are important to Wagiman way of life.

LENNY AND TERESA DORISVALE, FLY DREAMING AND RAINSTONES ALONG CLARAVALE ROAD

Follow Lenny and Teresa to Dorisvale station where they talk about the terrible flood that occurred there years ago and how Lenny escaped it. Later, we find some rainstones along Claravale Road and find out what the rocks mean to the Wagiman. We will also talk about some of the hills along the way and the Fly Dreaming there.

Teresa tells her daughter Yvonne about how she used to work in the Old Pub in Adelaide River as a young woman.

Jabul also explains the dreaming of the area near Green Ant Creek and Hill and how the different Indigenous groups of the area used to do Wangi here in the past when crossing each other's borders..

Teresa and Jabul show Yvonne and Sophie where they used to live in Adelaide River. Jabul tells us about the weeds in the area and how they need to clean the place up. .

The Wagiman Elders take us along Claravale Road and show us the dreaming along the way as well as where they used to get tucker at a peanut farm and  Shilling Hole. We also learn about where the cheeky Garkine hawk hides his firesticks in bad weather. We also find some important rocks for making axes along the way.

TERESA, JABUL AND YVONNE - BAN BAN SPRINGS/ FOUNTAINHEAD ROAD

Follow Jabul, Teresa and Yvonne as they record their stories along the old Ban Ban road towards the old Ban Ban Springs cattle station where Jabul and Teresa talk about working there in the old days and loading cattle onto the train. We finish up at Grove Hill pub and talk about how Lenny used to live and work around there..

Follow Jabul, Teresa and Arthur as they revisit the old road out through Burrundie. We find some important dreaming spots as well as camping spots from the past and the present.
